Example text

There are at least three implications for feminism arising from the claim that there is no `doer behind the deed': one is that we can never know what women really are as there is no ultimate or essential core to woman; the second is that negative consequences have resulted from insisting that such a core exists; and third that the postmodern eschewal of essential subject-hood for woman does not inevitably imply a negative political stance. Let me explain each of these implications. Who are women?

The loss of the `female historical agent' may make women vulnerable to all manner of backlashes and leave women `quite familiarly powerless, ®lled with self-doubt, unable to assert the ethical necessity and certainty of anything' (Chancer, 1998: 26). ' doesn't have quite the same ring to it as Sojourner Truth's poignant plea, `And ain't I a woman? (Riley, 1988: 1) Postmodernist feminisms and the subject of `woman' The response: Modernists suffer from the illusion that there are real, a priori subjects on which to make claims to rights.

These six features suggest a wideranging and eclectic mixture of ideas and in¯uences which minimally include Marxism, radical feminism and psychoanalysis. This mixture of in¯uences together with the tensions over class versus gender all combine to make socialist feminism a fascinating and very complex set of ideas and practices. Additionally, the fortunes of the politics of socialism around the world over the last couple of decades (especially with the demise of the Soviet Union) have necessarily impacted on all forms of theoretical socialism, including socialist feminism.
